The captain claims that the rocks and dangers around the small island were not on his map so he thought it was just water. Source 4 However, he hit the rocks and kept going. He didn't call out for a mayday and apparently he abandoned the ship with passengers still on board. He also apparently didn't follow emergency protocol. Any way you look at it, he set a course that was going to have the boat hit the rocks. I do wonder if this was his first time for this particular cruise course. Just picked this one up though...perhaps showboating or a sort of competition to give a salute to the island with a close fly by was the cause? Source 5 That does seem pretty plausible!
