Basic Info

At maturity, Nelson's Milksnake will grow to be about 4 feet in length. The snake is red with black bands that are usually quite thick and with thin white bands. Also, there are now albino Nelson's Milksnakes available. There are at least two strains of albino Nelson's Milksnakes available. The Sipperly strain is the most common and can be traced back to Gary Sipperly of San Diego Reptile Breeders. The other strain is the Bull strain and was produced by Roger Bull from wild caught specimens.

The Nelson's Milksnake's beautiful appearance, medium size, and relative ease of care makes it a great pet to have. Nelson's Milksnakes usually have great temperaments. They adapt very well to captivity, and if handled properly and regularly, do not mind being handled. Their habitats should be medium to large, with a soft substrate and some foliage. A branch or two will be appreciated by the snake.

Nelson's Milksnakes are found throughout Mexico, including Acambaro, Guanajuato and Jalisco, especially along the Rio Grande River.

Common Foods

They are valued as wild animals on the farm and in urban areas as they eat mice and other rodents.
